Stiff Gear Shifting after sitting in traffic

I have a '96 900 SET with 75K miles that's in pretty good shape... I've had it for six months, took it on a 5000-mile roadtrip, no problems. Changed the oil on time, etc.
The other day I drove into New York City and had to sit in 40 minutes of stop-and-go traffic. By the time I was in the city, shifting from 1st to 2nd was very difficult -- I almost pulled over and had the car towed, but I was very late and close to my destination. Coming back to the car a few hours later, I fully expected to be calling AAA, only to find that the shift was as easy and smooth as ever. I drove home and it grew slightly stiffer but not noticeably.
I should also mention that I occasionally have a hard time getting the car into reverse to pull the key out - but it also goes after a few tries.
Any suggestions? I did a search but was unable to come up with much. I bought this car after my old 9000's tranny died -- it makes me nervous!
Thanks,
Betsey
