Replaced Clutch Cable but it disengages near floor!

My old clutch cable was frayed (97 900s 4cyl)and failing so I got a new one from the local dealer and following instructions gleaned from this list, installed it. It took me a while to figure out the spring holding the pedel end on but that was the only hang up.. The thing is that it disengages nearlly at the floor and sometimes it's difficult to get into gear even at the floor.
I was a little suprised when I was able to pop in the tranny end of the cable into the lever without using a pry-bar. Just pulled on the end of the cable and it slipped into the level cradle. It almost seems like the cable might be too long though the parts guy did ask me if it was a 4 or 6 cyl and it looks the same as the original cable...
Any suggestions? Is the lever on the tranny end adjustable in some way??
Thanks,
Bob
