I just bought a 96 900SE convertible, and my tonneau does the same thing. I took it by the dealership, and apparently it is a shaft that is bent. I found a techincal service bulleting for the problem also, and it confirmed what the dealership said. The part number is 45 57 906, $112.00 at trollhattan autoparts (http://www.cybertroll.com). It should take about 2hrs to have put in. I haven't had mine repaired yet though. The dealership wanted $150 for the part and $400 to install it. If you order the part yourself and have it put in somewhere else (or maybe your dealership won't try to charge you 4hrs labor for a 2hr job), it should cost about $250 to fix. You might as well order the reinforcement bracket for the hinge and have it put in at the same time (if it isn't in there already). The part number is 46 13 535. It should only be around $6.
