I had the check gearbox thing in my '97 900s automatic 2 years ago. Similar to the problem you've described. Cold mornings, car would be stuck in 3rd gear, and even if I shifted into 1st, the tranny would only go to 2nd, and the check gearbox light would be on. Restarting after warming up would only work sometimes. It was the neutral safety switch. My extended warranty covered it, so it cost me $50 instead of about $450 as I recall (plus the cost of the warranty, but that has paid for itself by now - see below). If you are still under warranty, you should be all set.

'97 900s 104K and going strong (after a steering rack last spring, and an SRS contact switch - the airbag switch in the steering wheel, ALL covered by the extended warranty. Those would have been expensive!)
