The pullies cost around $38 each and the belt is close to $50 these days.
There is a GM partnumber belt that is shorter and fits fine, bypassing the lower pully. The lower pullie is very hard to replace. So get the GM belt for $18 and save $38 on the lower pully and save the effort or labor cost to replace the lower pully as well.
I hate to see anyone, or a dealer skimping on these pullies whent the result is getting towed or wor$e.
The newer 9-3's had this same belt routing with no lower pully above the crankshaft. Field proven and safe. I have a post under drs<underscore>install
Sph3re has bee posting for quite a while now, so should be very well aware of the belt and pully issues. I feel that everyone has a responsibiltity to inspect the pullies themselves. The risk is all to common. Change out a upper idler early and keep that for a spare in with the spare tire, and keep a decent used belt there too, or a new GM belt for $18. These things happen.
There is no danger is driving the vehile for a short bit at low loads. But never try to go a distance. The water pump doesn't and the head can overheat and boil. Steering is almost impossible. With idle the brakes will get full vacuum boost.
It sounds like the dealer might be responsible if an old belt was put on old dry pullies. But they will cover there butts for sure. All the more reason to take some matters into your own hand.
These failures will always happen unless you really pay check things out. It is sort of like an unexpeted pregnancy, and saying I did not think that it happen to me.
This will be interesting. Perhaps something other than the pullies! Keep us posted.
