The K&N filter is basically just 'plug and play'. No other modifications are necessary.

A couple points though:

Mark one end as "front" or "rear". The plastic airbox is never perfectly square and once the filter conforms to the shape of the airbox it is better to reinstall the filter the same way each time.

The use of a small amount dielectric/silicone grease smeared on the filter gasket helps the filter seal better and make sure the gasket doesn't adhere to the airbox housing.

Every so often (say 15,000 miles) wipe out the airbox and vacuum the K&N filter surface to remove any large particles that may damage the filter gauze.
