The LCD we are most familar with (like in a watch) are reflective LCDs and have polarizing filters oriented so that the LCD display is optically clear and the light from the front of the panel is reflected back at the viewer. Except when energized, then the LCD blocks the light and appears black, thus giving black numbers on a light silver reflective surface. Any light soucre must come from the front of the display.
In a backlit LCG panel the polarizing filters are oriented so that the LCD display is optically opaque except when energized, then it becomes optically clear. The clear segments of the LCD display allow a light source from behind the panel to be seen, presenting lighted numbers on an opaque background. In this type of panel the light soucre must come from behind the panel.
In both types of LCD panels, a colored filter may also be used. For the Saab ACC this color filter produces an orange appearance to the display.
