I put in the K&N filter and ,after much procrastination, did the 3" intake mod - then kicked myself for putting it off so long!!!
Follow REM's directions and its a piece of cake!! I did some "fancy" stuff - used 3 3/8 outside diameter PVC pipe, flared the intake end by heating it over the gas stove and then rotating it over a pyrex bowl. I used (very) fast drying PVC cement to tack the pipe into the airbox and then sealed the gaps (my cutting was pretty poor)with silicone sealant. After it had set up I spray painted it black and reinstalled it. 10 minutes to take it out and put it back - an hour or so messing with the pipe, cussing (critical part of every job)sticking it in and painting it - plus another couple of hours waiting for the sealant to cure enough to paint. You can tell I was in no rush!
Some observations - seems to have much faster spool-up and better boost - and a noticeable increase in induction noise - you can hear the car "breathe":-)
