It *might* be that the "low" cooling fan speed relay or associated cooling fan motor circuitry may have failed, and as a result, the pressure switch on the A/C system, combined with the coolant temperature sensor, in a deperate effort to reduce the temperature of the front cooling group, then sends a signal to engage "high" speed on the cooling fan, which presumably still works.

I'm describing a scenario that happened to my 96 900S at around this same mileage.

The most common system of this is that the cooling fan NEVER stays or comes on after shutting the engine off even after idling with the A/C on full for several minutes after driving around. And, as you noted the sudden demand on the electrical system for electricity to run the cooling fan immediately at high speed (which it almost never goes to, if the cooling system is properly maintained)causes panel lights to dim due to the voltage sag, along with a blip in the idle as the alternator struggles to meet this sudden electrical load, not to mention the startup torque caused by the fan itself switching immediately from "off" to "high".

On my car, the temp gauge never showed anything was wrong, hovering in the same place it usually does.

If this seems likely, check the relays first. In my case, total fan replacement was necessary (to the tune of several hundred dollars at the dealership) - I can dig the service order out if you really want to know.
