Problem with just putting a cone filter at the end of the intake is that it will draw hot air from the engine compartment rather than cool air from outside the car - you'll lose the benefit of the increased airflow because of the decreased density of the hot air.
I procrastinated on the airbox mod for over a year - thought it would be difficult. It was really quite easy - even though I did a really awful job of cutting the hole, by the time I was finished it was just fine. After I'd done it I wished I hadn't put it off for so long.
The MBC was another mod I really wasn't sure about. A couple of years ago Dean was raving about it and others were on about the Abbott ECU upgrade. For $40 I though, what the heck, I'll try it - I can always sell it on E Bay. Anyway - I read the instructions and the various posts and put it on. Adjusting took a long time but WOW!!!!!!! -- Dean was right! It makes an incredible difference.
I find I take a bit longer than some people to do these jobs - I read up carefully then do the job carefully and methodically - I'm a paper pusher in "real life" not a mechanic - but I found the airbox and MBC upgrades to be the quickest and least expensive way to SIGNIFICANT performance improvements.
