I sssume you replaced the linkage with the upgrade kit. Did you follow the recommended procedure to align the shift lever with the tranny? It is fairly simple.
Put the tranny in 4th gear. On the top of the tranny, there is a small plug covering an access hole. Pry out the plug and insert a small screwdriver or Allen wrench (approx. 4 mm dia.) in the hole to lock the transmission in position (4th gear). Then loosen the nut on the shift linkage that holds it to the shift lever rod that protrudes through the firewall.
Sit in the driver's seat, and remove the gaiter from the shift lever. Directly in front of where the lever enters the housing, you will find another alignment hole. Move the shift lever to where you think 4th gear should be and insert another Allen wrench or drill bit into this hole. You will be able to feel the correct position of the shift lever with the drill bit when you find it.
Return to the engine compartment, and tighten the nut on the shift linkage to complete the alignment. Remove all screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, drill bits, etc., used for alginment, and replace the gaiter.
If you need more detailed info, see Chapter 7A3 in the Haynes Manual - Saab 900 (93-98).
