I have a well-maintained 1995 900S, with the 2.3 non-turbo engine + automatic transmission. She has 81,000 miles. Whenever the car is stopped, either in Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive, the idle never drops below about 950-1000 RPM. Seems pretty high. SOMETIMES, in Park and Neutral, the idle climbs to about 1500-2000 RPM after driving. Drops back down to 1000 RPM when in Drive or Reverse.

Just had new exhaust, new universal catalytic converter, de-carbonized combustion chambers, new engine mount, new transmission mount, new brake pads all around, new timing belt + pulleys, parking brake adjustment, new tires and Saab wheels, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Thank god for the student discounts I've guilted Burlingame Saab and Saab of South Bay into. Love those guys, a lot.

Any ideas on the high idle?
