Here's a story from someone who usually puts above average reliability as a must before buying a car. I just bought a Saab 1 month ago after doing research and test drives for 2 years. I was looking for my once in a lifetime convertible with a budget of $10,000. Obviously, I did not buy a new one. What attracted me to a Saab was its rapid depreciation, the way the top is covered by the hardcover, and the fact that I could fit into it since I am on the large side. Reliability would have been a key factor but there are no convertibles on the market with above average reliability for under $10,000 that have enough room for me.(mazda miata, toyota celica, mitsubishi eclipse are too small inside). Had my budget been $30,000, I would be driving a new or nearly new toyota solara convertible. That being said, it might have been a difficult decision after test driving a Saab. Saab reliability is at best average, on a par with the better models of GM and Ford, better than any chrysler(I have owned some.) Nearly all cars with above average reliability are japanese. That's just the way it is. On a personnal level I replaced a 1991 mazda with the saab. The mazda, I bought new, never had a warranty repair, drove 140,000miles, 2 sets of tires, 2 batteries, 2 sets of spark plugs, 2 sets of oem wiper blades, 1 set of brakes front and rear, a radiator, fluids and filters. No other repairs, still has original clutch. That's reliability. Saab has a lot of things going for it, but above average reliability is not one of them.Had it been my overiding criteria, I would not have bought one, nor would I have bought a car with below average reliability for any reason. I am not trashing the car, I just bought one and am very happy with it. I am just being honest.
