Changed out voltage regulator recently Posted by saabstory [Email] (#1919) [Profile/Gallery] (more from saabstory) on Mon, 10 Nov 2003 06:08:29 In Reply to: Bad voltage regulator symptoms?, Gabor, Wed, 5 Nov 2003 13:27:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just changed out my voltage regulator recently (It was very difficult to find ... everyone just wants to sell you a complete starter for 5 times the money). It was quite difficult to get at (see previous threads in here somewhere ... basically you have to get at two very difficult to reach hex bolts to get the starter out. I never got the starter out, I just removed it and left it in the engine compartment cubbyhole and used really long arms to swap the voltage regulator in place). One other note: make sure to remove the tensioner pully on the auxillary belt to get at the top hex nut. Otherwise, you may not even find the nut you need to remove!
Anyway, the symptoms: When at idle speed, the "battery" light would flicker on, and I would get the console "ding, ding, ding". As the RPM's increased, the battery light would fade and finally disappear. Whenever the RPM's decreased, the light would come back on.
