Beginning my first Saab winter. Here is the current problem:
When cold (sitting all night), the car is having trouble starting. It will start, but it is as if the "choke" is stuck on, and it gasses itself out and dies. If I hold the gas down a bit while starting, I can get it to cough and sputter a bit in the 1000-1500 rpm range. Very rough. More gas does not help, less will kill it. If I give it more gas while starting, it will sputter slightly until it starts and POP, it kicks over 2500 rpm, and purrs like a kitten. If I let the rpm drop, it will be "stuck" sputtering again, and I will not be able to rev it any higher until it kills. Then, let it sit, put on more gas, and let it purr again at higer rpms. If I let it warm up enough, then it will not "choke" out again once I decrease the rpms again. Then the engine is fine until the next cold morning start.
To me it seems as if something is obviously sticking in the intake. I put through a can of injector cleaner (B-12 Chemtool), found a broken vacuum tube (from PCV to intake manifold), put in new plugs, and cleaned out the butterfly air valve with some carb cleaner. No real improvement. Any Ideas?
One other note: it may be my imagination, but my gas mileage has been pretty bad when driving around town recently. Highway gets me up to 30 mpg, but I am averageing around 20 or so in town, and we treat it very gently. Is something happening on the low rpm end that may be related? Again, once "warmed up" it runs fine, but gas mileage is suspect.
