Tracking down coolant leaks

I have put about 5K on my first saab, and it now has 125K. I am trying to track down some coolant leaks.
The bottom of the engine (around the crankcase pan) is really dirty. I first thought it was oil leaking, but I am now fairly certain it is coolant. Right around the water pump (I removed the power steering pump to get a better look), there looks like a lot of seepage. I tried tightening the 2 water pump bolts (the ones right next to eachother?), but am skeptical that anything good will happen because of this ... I would like to tighten any bolts on the gasket there (is this lower gasket the "head gasket", while the upper one on top of the engine is the "valve cover gasket"?), but there aren't really any that I can see.
Also, on the other side around where the thermostat is the top of the transmission is very oily looking (again, I am fairly certain it is coolant from above), and this drips down and virtually covers the entire gearbox in grime. The hoses themselves seem good. I see no leaks around them.
I am guessing I have gasket problems. One other fear: I changed oil this weekend and saw a white-grey sludge deposit on the bottom of the dipstick. Is this coolant that leaked into the oil? If it is this gasket, how do you either tighten it up or replace it w/o pulling apart the whole engine?
