Finally got around to doing the 3" intake mod last weekend, using the flared speaker port tube ($13 plus shipping). So far it seems to be working fine, no apparent ill effects of under-hood heat. No additional intake noise and it seems to come on boost a bit faster now (2/3 into the red by 15-20mph in 1st).

The tube comes with two flared ends, packed loose. The larger one (toward you in the photo) flares out to a flat flange with screw holes, presumably for the speaker mounting. The smaller flare, away from you in the photo, is the one I used. It is a very smooth bell-shape. When fitted into the straight tube, the internal surface is perfectly smooth at the joint.

I left the flare un-glued because with it attached to the (shortened) 3" tube, it is too wide to clear some internal obstructions when you refit the airbox. So, I removed the headlight and set the length of the 3" tube so that the bell just snugly dry fits into the end of the tube from the front with not enough room ahead of it to let it wiggle loose.

So far so good.

P.S. Taking out a Saabnet Classified ad for my Taliaferro/Speedparts intake kit. Worked fine the few days I used it, just a bit loud for certain family members.
