Hi Guys,
I'm worried about oil sludge. I've put about 55,000 miles on my car since I bought it used. I have almost 90,000 miles now. As long as I have owned the car I have noticed a slight "ticking" sound at idle that I assumed was related to the valvetrain. I have never worried about it too much, until recently I read the following quote from http://www.thesaabsite.com/900new/NG900faqs.htm#HOW%20DO%20I%20DETERMINE%20IF%20MY%20OIL%20PICKUP%20TUBE%20IS%20CLOGGED%20UP
"One of the most common issues with Saab engines is a clogged up oil pickup tube. Paraffin based oils will cause build up on the oil pickup screen causing the engine components that are farthest away from the oil supply to make noise. ie....Valve train, lifters etc.... You will likely find that the waxy build up begins to block the screen. This is usually caused by too long of a time between oil changes. The only real fix is to remove the oil pan on the 9000, NG900, 93, 95 and to remove the tranny on the 900 to repair this issue."
So, to make a long story short; I'd like to take off my oil pan this weekend and check for any sludge that might be clogging the oil pickup tube. This is on short notice and I have not been able to find much info by searching the bulletin board. If I can get a new oil pan gasket from my local indie Saab shop, can I just drop the oil pan by draining the oil and removing the ~20 bolts? Are there any steering componants or anything that will need to be removed to get the oil pan off?
Also, if the screen on the oil pickup tube is clogged; what is the best way to clean it? Will it pop off for easy scrubbing?
Thanks in advance for the info. I would jack the car up and look myself, but I'm not going to be able to do that until Saturday and thats when I'm hoping to knock this out. This is the only car I have, so if I hose things up Saturday I don't know how I will get to work on Monday!
