Timing chain on 2000 9-3?

I have a 2000 Saab 9-3 convertible with 70K miles. I've had it serviced regularly--at the dealership. Usually I've averaged an oil change every 6K miles, but the last oil change was at 60K miles.
The check engine light came on, so I took it in for service.
They told me that the timing chain is about to blow, and that it's not even worth fixing.
I am having another mechanic look at it this morning ... but any ideas as to how the timing chain could be ready to go at only 70K miles?
Otherwise the car is in good condition and it's driving well.
