A Million Little Pieces, by James Frey. This is an autobiographical story of the author's experiences in rehab as he breaks a ten-year addiction to alcohol and various hard drugs. It was an amazing, harrowing, great, terrible, impossibly gripping read. The back cover tells you where the story begins: 23 years old, he wakes up on an airplane, no idea where he's going or how he got on the plane, covered in blood and vomit, with horrific injuries to his face. And once you turn to page one and start reading, it's impossible to put it down. You can almost feel his pain and sickness--in fact, some parts of the book are extremely difficult to read. You can also feel his incredible strength. It's a naked, brutal, honest account of the ravages of drug abuse (he favored alcohol, crack, and glue). I found that the pseudo-poetic, stream-of-consciousness style occasionally got in the way, and there were a few flashes of triteness, but overall, it was a worthy, and moving, though not always pleasant, experience. Most highly recommended.
