advantage of clearcoating......... Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Tue, 12 Aug 2003 10:27:57 In Reply to: paint tech question..., stiggy, Sat, 9 Aug 2003 21:52:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Sure, your car would look good with no clearcoat....but for how many years? What if after a few years your paint becomes faded and you want to liven it up by buffing it out. Buffing will upset the flow pattern of the silver metallics and you will regret opting for no clearcoat. Save your money and go with a basecoat/clearcoat system. Personally I use PPG products, but whatever your paint shop uses should work just as well.
Sterling Silver Metallic is a gorgeous color. I had a 74EMS painted that color. All of the old manuals I have mention a varnish that was applied over the metallic colors. My guess is that the varnish was the 70's technology of todays clearcoats.
I've never heard of a flat or doped up clearcoat, so I won't try to offer up an answer. Remember the old saying.....you get what you pay for.:)
