Ok, I've never seen advice like this, but then I never read an owners manual cover to cover before getting a Saab.
In the owners manual for the 93SS, Saab advises agains the use of soap when washing the car during the first several months of its life. I don't recall the exact explanation (don't have it in front of me at the moment) but their reasoning had to do with the paint being "soft" and thus more prone to absorbing chemicals in the detergent. Instead they recommend a cold water rinse.
They also mention that waxing is really not neccessary until the paint starts to show signs of oxidation.
So, that's the Saab point of view, but what is the practical experience out there? I've already been in situations where cold water rinse just would not do - there is one spring time curse worse the pollen: bugs...on a couple of trips I've returned to find them splattered all over the hood and windshield. Soap seems like the only choice in these cases. It also seems that using a detergent of some kind is the only way to lift off some of the dirt and dust that would otherwise be dragged around when I dry the car.
So, should I be more concerned about the potential damage of a mild detergent, or about the possibility of not getting some of the dirt and grime off the finish?
