Peanut oil, Dawn dish liquid, Paint thinner.... I have used both Peanut Oil and Dawn dishwashing detergent to remove excess wax from the plastic trim. Peanut Oil or Dawn dishwashing detergent will help dissolve the wax. First apply some undiluted Peanut Oil or Dawn dishwashing detergent to the area using a soft cloth. Agitate the area using an old tooth brush to get in all the microscopic nooks and crannies. Wipe the area thoroughly with your soft cloth, and then wash the area with car soap and water and rinse clean.
If the wax residue is really old and dried on, you may need to carefully use paint thinner and a tooth brush to remove the wax residue.
After cleaning, treat the plastic trim with a product like Mothers “Back to Black”’, Griot’s Garage “Vinyl and Rubber Dressing” or 3M Marine Vinyl Cleaner and Restorer. Here is a tip – Treat the plastic trim with a vinyl dressing before waxing the car to help prevent any wax that may be misapplied from sticking to the trim.
