fixing peeling paint

Much to my dismay this spring I've found a 1" X 2" area of flaked paint on the bottom edge of my front passenger door. Along with the attendant rust underneath - yikes.
Searching has revealed several involved techniques for repair, my main concern would be longevity.
Probably won't be building a heat box to cure the paint.
I could grind / sand off the rust, prime, multiple layers of touch up, beyond that I'm exceeding my ham handed abilities as a auto body specialist.
Are chances good I could effect repairs that wouldn't need attention for say two years, or should i consider having a body shop look at it?
Theres a few spot on lower rear doors that look to have rust poking thru - just bigger than pinholes but getting ready to row.
I know most here are DIY inclined, is there a point where it makes sence to have a professional involved? Looks aren't my primary concern as the area effected is small (sofar), and well, stuff happens to daily drivers around these (salt/rocks/mud/dirt) parts.
