"seating surfaces" are real leather cowhide... That is to say the part of the seat that touches your body (face of the bottom cushion, the face of the seat back, and the headrest are all leather). You are correct that the lower part of the seat backs are vinyl (the part with the pockets), as are the sides of the seats and edges of the bottom cushion. Most leather care products will not cause any harm to the vinyl portions. Neither the leather or the vinyl of the seats in my 1998 900SET have suffered any harm from 10 years of Griot's Leather Care.
If you look very closely the vinyl sections do not have a pronounced a grain as the leather sections.
