The oil makes it look better for a while. Eventually it all washes away and it looks like it did before.

There are lots of ideas about this. The only one I've seen work long term is with solid black items (i.e. rubber) and using some rubbing compund to remove some surface material. You can go with one of the restoration dye/coverup products for other items.
