Having sold a few cars in the past, here are a few hints:
1. If you advertise, make yourself available for inquiries. Don't run an ad and then go away for the weekend thinking everyone will leave messages.
2. As mentioned by the other poster, always go along for the test drive. It is not considered rude to ask for license and insurance info. If the prospect balks, then thank them for their interest and walk away.
3. When you have agreed on a price, the transaction must be in cash or certified funds. Alternatively, you can transact at the prospect's bank where a personal check can be immediately verified. A bank is a good place to transact in any event.
4. Have _your_ documentation ready. This would include your registration and title. If your car is still financed, call and find out the payoff and how the title (they are holding it) can be obtained. Different states have different requirements for additional documentation (bills of sale etc.) find out what else is needed. Find a notary public (most banks will have one) so that you can complete the transaction as quickly as possible.
5. Don't hand over the keys/title until _everything_ is settled.
