1 - The new 9-3 has been selling for only a few months (Linear since October and Arc & Vector since April/May.) I see tons of them on the streets of metro DC by the way. Also, do you expect them to get to 200,000 units the first year? After selling only 40,000 total cars in the US the previous year? I don't think so. Also, how can you possibly track how many sales SAAB's taken from other makes like BMW, Audi, Volvo, MB etc after only a few months? Market share takes longer to determine. Have patience. Of course you're going to see more G-35s on the road - they've been selling longer than the 9-3 and Nissan/Infiniti does more volume than SAAB at this point.
2 - Cannibalizing sales from the 9-5 may be true, but do you have any evidence to support that or is that just a guess? My guess is that may be a natural occurance since the 9-5 is dated and due for a re-design in 2005. Having said that, my wife just bought a 9-5 in March. Liked it better than the 9-3 - said it was more distinctive, more unique, didn't feel as cheap, BIGGER etc.
3 - As for SAAB not being able to sell to other buyers who don't traditionally consider SAABs - I say hogwash! What proof do you have to be so pessimistic? With all the money they're pouring into advertising, I see tons of people in showrooms each time I'm in there (for service or when my wife bought one). Also, almost every time I'm there, potential customers will ask me when they see I'm there for service "How do you like the car?" and "How's this dealer?" etc. To me, those questions indicate they haven't bought SAABs before, or at least not in awhile. I have nothing but positives to say about our cars and dealerships/salesmen.
Don't mean to blast you, but you asked for thoughts, so you have mine.
Cheers.
