J, your statement comparing synthetic motor oils to naturally occurring motor oils is far too broad to support. Not that simple...too many variables....too many valid tests, surveys and conclusions concerning the two types over the years synthetic has been popular.
The thinking owner who wants good long service in any vehicle will pick and choose from top quality name brand motor oils, synthetic or not, and as long as they match the manufacturer's stated requirements ( in every handbook) he/she can expect that kind of service.
In general terms, I do agree with the Boise tech: As long as oil and filter are changed at 3000 mile intervals (or 4000, or 5000,etc), as long as high quality products are used, the owner can expect good service life. The point is, the majority of Americans don't bother to change their oil at all, or at best, seldom, hence, their lives are filled with costly engine overhauls and replacements. MY motto: Keep it all clean, inside and outside, all the time!
