The Saab transverse front manual transmission has been used in other GM cars since GM bought a half interest in 1990. The transmission has been modified a couple of times over the years. It added "spin-weld" assembled gears rather than "machined from a single chunk" to make the box narrow enough for the NG900, a process developed through a GM/Chrysler joint venture for designing and manufacturing manual gearboxes in the USA. Most recently it was fitted with a new synchronizer material, and of course a cable shift linkage for the 9-3SS.
This is a very well designed manual gearbox with some interesting design features. Lubrication flow is carefully considered, the overhung 5th gear adds rigidity by shortening the shaft length between bearings and adding a cover, synchro function is split between the two shafts so that the larger of the gears in mesh gets the synchro - that means larger, longer lived and more effective function. GM is smart to keep using it!
