Most small US towns will have a UPS/Fedex dealer - they will often accept shipments. I ship all my stuff to a Fedex dealer an hour from my home - I drive to the US, pick up the item, and drive home.
You STILL have to declare the item at Customs and pay the GST, PST and possibly a low rate of duty even if you pick the item up yourself, unless you stay long enough in the US that the item can be included in your duty-free exemption.
By shipping to a US address basically you save the outrageous add-on costs of shipping internationally like the additional brokerage (screwage) charge that UPS adds on international shipments. Plus the shipping itself is much cheaper.
