I've taken them to a big open shopping center parking lot early on a Saturday morning before the stores open and let them drive my manual trans car so they get a feel for driving a stick. It seems the driving schools are exclusively automatic in the USA (at least) and I wanted them to be able to drive a manual trans.
I've let them use old (10+ year) cars that have ponderous acceleration, and with which they can get to their destination safely but without any theatrics. Nothing better that a totally underpowered Ford to give to a teenager. I shudder to think what parents were thinking when they gave 17 year old Buffy a 200+HP Infiniti!
