such as "IP Cop" or "Smoothwall". They only require a spare low-end x486 to run on, and with ethernet cabled to your own machine for connectivity. They are simple to set up, and require very little knowledge to get going in their default mode.
I run an IP Cop 486 at home, with my modem attached to it doing the dialling. No setup beyond the main menus was required, and the setup can be done from your own machine using a browser.
This is, in my experience, far safer than a Windows firewall, as hackers out there are really only targeting Windows machines, and find the Windows firewalls pretty easy to compromise.
