If distance is no object, take a drive northwest to Llano and eat at Cooper's (1.5 hours drive). They BBQ the good stuff here like pork loin and steak on huge outdoor grills where you can select your own cuts. Reasonably priced as well. Next choice would be the Southside Market in Elgin, especially for the sausage. In town, check out Pokejo's for quick and dirty, and County Line for a dining experience. For homestyle Mexican cooking start out on south first at the river and head south. For the next three or four miles there will be various homestyle Mexican restaurants on both sides of the street. Polvo's( about a mile and half south on the right) on south first street is a MUST for breakfast tacos. Cheap and great. Actually, it's probably the best overall. This is a local favorite of the area musicians including Marcia Ball and Joe Ely. For a Mexican dining experience try Fonda San Miguel for excellent interior Mexican food, mole to die for.
Enjoy our great city. You will find the people friendly and very "music" minded.
