Ya know, if everyone was to blindly follow the law just because it is the law we would still have slavery, women couldn't vote, and any number of other nasty things in our country's history that we aren't proud of. No one now says Rosa Parks should have just gone to the back of the bus because it was the law, or that she should have found more civic ways to oppose injustice.

Unfair comparison? Maybe, but it is still the government applying draconian laws to people without any evidence of these effectiveness. Highway deaths per mile went down when the government handed speed limit control to the states in the early '90s (ie when limits went up from 65). Highway deaths per mile went UP dramatically when Montana revoked it's "reasonable and prudent" limit. There is no proof that low speed limits save lives.

What there is proof of is that the safest speed to go is the so-called "85th percentile," or 85% of the prevailing rate. If you go slower, even if it is the speed limit, you are more likely to be in an accident. That's fact. Drive on any major city ring road and you'd believe it. Should I obey the law when it puts people in danger? I don't believe so.

The real criminals, in my mind, are those that impose unreasonable and unsafely low speed limits. People die because of these limits, and to me that is very serious stuff. However, it sounds good to politicians to support low speed limits, and they like the revenue source. Is this a good reason to obey a law, again I don't think so.

The law is simply not always right, and I feel that you are approaching this issue as if it is very clear cut, when it is far from it. That's my two cents anyway.
