I still get Ultra 94 in Toronto. I've heard that the additives they use to get it to 94 are simply methanol. They advertise it as more environmentally friendly. (something on the signs about "how hippies get to the rally" or the like)
Esso here quietly lowered the Octane of their super from 92 to 91. I've noticed if I use it I get a bit of a stink from the car. I inquired at one station as to what happened to the super and apparently they had already prepared a flyer for those who asked (saves the minimum wage guy behind the counter from screwing up their excuses)The flyer was not displayed, it was behind the counter. It basically said that only a small percentage of cars on the road required Octane of 92 or above (the sticker inside the gas door on my Aero wagon says 92 recommended for best performance) and that their new gas was just as good as the old one. Something to do with supply and distribution was their reasoning. I see it as a way to sell me shittier gas at the same price as the better stuff they had before.
Sorry about the rant... point of the story is Esso sucks and you can still get Sunoco in Ontario so come'n get it.
