How long to let engine idle when really cold?

We've had unusually cold temperatures here in NC ... and after a friend mentioned he let his engine warm up for 20 minutes after sitting outside overnight, we ended up in quite the debate.
I had always heard letting the engine idle for 1 - 2 mintues was adequate, and that light driving after that point was better than letting the engine idle excessively. Idling when extremely cold outside (below 32F) does not allow fluids to completely move through the system.
Is there any rule / truth to either of the above? Thx -
