Alex, I agree with what Mark has stated. I also have a Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology and work in the biotech industry. I would seriously consider the bioinformatics field with your background. I think that it is easier for someone with a computer background to learn to molecular genetics than vice versa. I would expect such Ph.D. programs at a good school to pay a stipend close to $20k a year with no tuition cost and take 4-6 years to complete.
However, you also mentioned how you enjoyed teaching, working with people, etc., so such a research path might not be for you. I'm in R&D so I spend most of my day either at the computer or in the lab. It's not really a people sort of job, however, I thoroughly enjoy it.
I personally would not pursue a Ph.D. for an academic career. At least in science, this usually involves a Ph.D. followed by 3-4 years as a post doc and then having to compete in a very tight job market that doesn't pay well to begin with. I think if you want to teach consider high school teaching.
Good luck,
Wes
