Here in CO for a number of years they've been using Magnesium Chloride which is a de-icer for the roads. Turns out there's a lot of toxins in it that's been killing trees out here and also another study proved that it's very bad for your cars and will just eat it's way in. Up in the high country, they litterally put down gravel on the roads. I asked a state worker once about why they use what they do instead of salt/sand like most places. The answer was "That stuff will rot and ruin your cars".
After a $7200 insurance claim from all of the gravel hitting my car on a road trip, I just had to laugh at his explanation.
Now they are suggesting that you wash your car right away...daily if you are out driving the roads after the mag chloride is used. Keep in mind we've been on a serious water ban and drought here for a few years now.
Go figure!
