Hey, you mean you're not using a top-notch synthetic?? ;-)
I just opened my filters last night! I've been trying to find a decent cutting tool for the past few weeks, but I finally gave up & just used a new chisle to cut around the entire can. One of the filters had magnets still in place around the outside, & I didn't want to generate lots of shavings/filings when I opened it up.
I had one from my '90 after 6500 miles & 13 mos with M1 15W-50 (this one had the magnets), a second one from my '90 after another 1700 miles on the same oil but with Auto-Rx added, & a filter from the '85 after 1700 miles on new 5W-30 semi syn (presumably Saab oil, but the dealer loaded it, so I can't be sure) with Auto-Rx. As I opened the cans, the oil from the '85 was clearer & free-er flowing.
The garage was pretty cold ("... fingers ... hurt ... can't ... bend ... can't ... feel ..."), so I'll check the filters again today after they've warmed up in the basement for a while. Preliminary results? The oldest filter from the '90 had "grit" in it, while both A-Rx filters didn't. No flakes of sludge, no chunks, no sand, nothing. I didn't pull the pleats off the center tubes, so I'll try to do that today as well. I'll let you know what I see.
