Midtown is certainly a happenin' place. It is constantly changing from the hippie turned biker turned gay now turning yuppie demographics. While living in the thick of it means you could walk to bars, restaurants and the park, it also means that they can walk to you. Street life can be a bit "ripe" at some times and with the recent boom in residential construction (mostly mid-rise condos), prices and congestion have gone up.
I would suggest that you broaden your search to the fringe areas to the north and east of Midtown. There are lots of little "secret neighborhoods" off the beaten path that will be a bit quieter but still close to the action.
Another link for searching rentals is the daily newspaper, the Journal-Constitution. They have a search engine in their want ads. Link is below.
