Most WAP phones only understand WML, or wireless markup language. These are "dumbed down" web pages specifically for cell phones.
HTML is the language used by normal web pages, such as SAABNET. Only devices like the PocketPC phone or Treo will be able to understand this. But getting HTML on your device doesn't mean you'll necessarily have HTTPS access. Depends on the phone, carrier, and plan.
Not sure about that Kyocera, never used it. Try asking at HowardForums (link below).
On T-Mobile, if you subscribe to the full internet plan ($20/mo), yes, you can use it with your laptop and get HTTPS.
Verizon & Sprint have faster data than T-Mobile though. If I'm not mistaken, Verizon & Sprint are about twice the speed of a 56k modem, whereas T-Mobile is only 56k.
