You need to find out exactly how they are getting paid. Not just by you, but if they are getting paid on the back end by others such as a mutual fund company. Make sure they are very specific (percent, per transaction fee, etc). A fee only advisor is one way to avoid conflicts of interest. You are willing to tell this person everything about you financial and personal life, they should be willing to tell you how they earn a living.
Personally I would also like the conversation to start with the advisor asking detailed info on my life plans and goals. If they aren't interested in what the money will be used for in the future, then how can they invest the money to best line up with your plans. If they don't know that you want to retire at X age and then spend 3 years traveling in an RV ($$) and then do part time consulting, or what ever your plans, then I would be sceptical. They might be looking to take more risk than your goals require.
