By the way, I have had this exact thing happen to my A/C a few times. Twice it was a dead spider in the contactor outside preventing the contacts from making.
Unless you know what you are doing, I would not suggest checking in that kind of detail. However, do check that the circuit breaker is turned on and check the outside unit to be sure some kid did not open the electrical disconnect. It looks just like a circuit breaker and is installed on a wall beside the compressor. Turn it off and on a couple of times. See what happens. I will send you a bill if this fixes the problem. :-)
