I have a '96 900 SET (auto) with similar mileage. Oil has always been changed by the dealer, so whatever Saab recommends goes in every 5,000 miles whether it needs it or not. I've had no problems with knocking or sludge. The last time the technician checked was around 90,000 miles when several oil leaks were repaired. The car lives in the midwest, and I do not show much respect for it's age. It gets driven fairly hard, lots of city drives, usually in Sport mode.
You should probably post on the NG900 board, as many posters there have this vintage car. Some claim that the NA (non-turbo) version has the most problems with sludge.
I love this car. Lots of squeaks and rattles, but it's fun to drive and very utilitarian.
BTW, you didn't ask, but you will get better performance with premium fuel.
