As a consultant, I have been travelling in my work for more than 8 years and have gone through several pieces of luggage. I have found that Samsonite Silhouette (they make cheaper lines, so watch out) is the Honda Accord of luggage with great durablilty and value. Most luggage at or below its price point is crap. To get better (Hartmann, Tumi, Briggs) you will pay _much_ more.
Can you make do with a carryon? Checking luggage and having it manhandled by ramp agents is what destroys it.
