The Diesel's main attraction in Europe is not so much it's economy (although that's important) but because it is taxed differently making it as little as half the cost of gasoline over there. There is only a modest savings right now in the US.

Most Diesels still have problems with emissions - the new Mercedes E-class Diesel cannot be sold in Califorina and four northeastern states because it can't meet emission regulations.

And, of course, there is still a lingering reputation in the U.S. of a Diesel's reliability which was pretty much shot to hell in the 80's with GM and Volkswagen rushing to market some underdevoped designs of warmed-over gasoline engines converted to Diesel. Even Mercedes couldn't sell Diesels after that.

All that torque sure would be nice, though. :-)
