In NYS proof of some amount of liability coverage is required to register a car. I remember always being told that $50,000 was a reasonable amount of coverage. But with all the higher end cars out on the roads, do most people still consider that enough? Playing the percentages, there are obviously far more cars on the road that cost less than $50,000 than cars that cost more than $50,000. And on top of that, depreciation reduces the value of even the higher end cars pretty rapidly. Further, it would be rather difficult for a car to sustain more than $50,000 worth of fixable damage wthour being deemed "totaled." Nonetheless, it would really stink to have to go out of pocket because insurance doesn't cover something. I'd be curious to hear people's views on this and what coverages people generally opt for.
