Hi Elliot,
With iTunes, you can right-click (Windoze) or CTRL-click (Mac) any song file (except those that were purchased from the iTMS) and choose to convert it to the file format you have preset. For purchased music, burn the AAC file to a disc and then rip into mp3 or whatever format and that'll get rid of the DRM.
When it comes to tweaks, some people go crazy and get really imaginative. I've had really good luck with isolation tricks. Spikes and half-raquetballs underneath CD player and amp. Stone tiles on top of components to add weight and dampen resonances. My CD player sounds COMPLETELY different without the spikes and stone tile. Speaker placement is important and you could spend weeks adjusting them (I have). Also the CD-Stoplight green pen is good for some discs. These are all cheap or free. Interconnect cables make a big difference, but that can get expensive fast. I like the cheaper MIT interconnects.
Good luck and remember to have fun.
David
