If I am looking for a car and I'm looking for something specific, I certainly don't cruise the 'hood hoping I'll pass one by.
Classifieds that also post on the Internet have been my favorite tool, lately as many of them have search functions so you can filter to see only the ads you want.
Houses are another matter because you are checking out the location as well as the structure. However, my last househunting effort involved a lot of computer and ad searching, whcih saved me a lot of unnecessary drive-bys as well as finding properties in "hidden" neighborhoods.
Both as a buyer and seller, I am very much a believer in advertising. It is by no means ridiculous. If the seller is too cheap to spring $50 for an ad, then they were probably too cheap to change the oil regularly.
